ROAD
The ROAD exhibition evolved in 2025 as a natural progression in McCormick’s practice — a
continuation rather than a break. Having developed a confident language in acrylics, he began
moving back toward the deeper brushwork and more considered composition that characterised
his earlier oil-based narrative pieces, without losing the clarity and colour that defined his more
recent work. A lifelong enjoyment of driving — particularly in his Alpine A110 GT — provided the
structure: long drives across the island of Great Britain became both subject and catalyst. The
sound of the engine, the sensation of speed, and the solitary rhythm of the road all informed this
new body of work. On the canvases, the flat blackness of the depicted roads acts almost like a
portal, inviting the viewer to drive forward into the compositions, while the surrounding colour
and brushwork infuse the paintings with energy and a sense of speed. That ongoing movement
through space, capturing a fleeting motoring moment, lies at the heart of ROAD.
