Biography

Duncan McCormick (b. 1977, Birmingham) is a versatile British artist whose work spans narrative oil painting, printmaking, and vivid acrylic landscapes and interiors. Educated at Ellesmere College, Shropshire, McCormick subsequently studied Art & Drama at St. Martin's College, Lancaster. For many years, McCormick painted narrative, figurative scenes in oils, developing deep compositional structures and storytelling. Over time he explored different mediums - including printmaking and pen & ink with watercolour - but always retained a fondness for colour, atmosphere, and the emotional resonance of place.

More recently, his practice has evolved: acrylics have played a major role in allowing immediacy, vibrancy, and boldness of colour; yet he has also moved back toward richly textured brushwork and more considered compositions that recall his earlier oil-based narrative work, without relinquishing the energy of his newer pieces. McCormick has exhibited nationally and internationally, and his paintings are held in both private and public collections. In 2018 he was commissioned by Morgan Stanley for an eleven‐piece series for their Canary Wharf offices and in 2023 the Pérez Art Museum Miami (PAMM) purchased two of his canvases.

His works have consistently achieved strong auction results — often surpassing their estimates and attracting interest from collectors across Europe, Asia and America. Notable examples include Nook, Trevor's Dream, The Road Home, and others that have reinforced his reputation for combining nostalgic atmosphere with painterly intensity. In 2025, McCormick embarked on ROAD: a new series inspired by long drives across Great Britain, his Alpine A110 GT, and the motion and solitude of travel. The work is built around landscapes in which flat, black roads draw viewers into the composition, while surrounding colour and brushwork generate speed and energy. In ROAD, movement becomes memory, light becomes distance — and each painting becomes an invitation to enter his world.
