The Road Home 2023
Medium: Acrylic on canvas (91cm x 152cm)
Before the first UK lockdown I had been playing around with acrylics and attempting to develop a clean, pseudo-naïve style of work that would be both easily accessible and fun. Possibly it was the result of my wife and I having twins in 2018, my thoughts had turned in the previous couple of years to childhood drawings and paintings. The formative years pre proper instruction but post the teacher (the late Mrs. Fisher was my first serious art teacher when I was still in shorts, she had a tin leg and a wonderful way of raising the pupil's drawing that she was talking about by placing it between her glasses and her forehead. Sometimes she'd stand on your foot without realising. She was a wonderful mixture of Tony Hart, Miss Marple, and Roald Dahl) telling the class to "fill up the whole page!". Sound advice.
The Road Home was painted in winter but recalls the warmth of summer. Driving back to our new home from one of the various Welsh beaches. The twins covered in sand, the smell of salt on our clothes, and the gentle tiredness from a grand day out. The signs flicker between Welsh and English as we criss-cross the border. It's a gentle work, bright and optimistic. 2020 was a year that we were going to need all the optimism we could muster! In 2023 it sold at Phillips Wired: Online Auction.
