The Carpenter
Medium: Oil on Linen, framed (1200 x 1200 mm)
The painting is an immediately accessible piece with a simple yet strong narrative. The composition has been painted from sketches and photographs made in a local carpenter's workshop and shows the carpenter working on a picture frame. It is that picture frame which frames the piece. The untreated wood and hessian frame adds an extra, tangible dimension to the painting and adds greatly to the feel of its workshop origin.
The workshop has been carried through at every level, from the brushwork to the colour palette it almost smells of sawdust. From the wood burner at the rear to the homemade ladder in the foreground you are invited into a cluttered yet peaceful space.
